The NEW Facebook

By September 29th, most of you will be looking at this design for your Facebook profile, which was unveiled at the F8 Conference this morning. It’s a beautiful thing. If you want to enable it early (like I did) check out this awesome Lifehacker article that explains how.

LIFTing Buffy

LIFTing Buffy

What’s a “LIFTr” and what does it have in common with Buffy? Why are you interrupting my day to talk about this? Shouldn’t you be eating tacos or something? I thought I unsubscribed to this blog!? These are all good questions. I’m expanding the style of my blog and the post content a bit. It’s not all about me.  Well, indirectly, it’s always about me. LIFTr A few years ago, before I wrote & published the Fail Whale Book, I wrote a series of articles for a company called LIFTr, about social media marketing for small business. They were designed …Read the Rest

Twenty Five Tacos

Twenty Five Tacos

That’s how many I ate. 25 tacos. All in the name of independent television.  It was over an 8 hour period, granted, but it was still 25 tacos. Last week, Allison Vanore and I had a telethon of sorts in order to raise money for two projects: “A Boy’s Life” and “Replaced.”  The premise was simple: we compete against each other by eating one taco for every $50 donated to each project. For the first two hours, I was doing great. I’d had 7 tacos, spread out, and felt that the pace was comfortable. Then “Replaced,” which I was representing …Read the Rest

ASJA Panel Event at Pages Bookstore

Tomorrow night at Pages Bookstore in Manhattan Beach, I’m proud to be part of an ASJA panel on Authors & Social Media.  We’ll be talking about how social media works in promoting and publishing your book, and answering questions from the audience.  They’ll also be a book signing after the panel, and refreshments are provided.  We had a long discussion about whether pants were necessary or not, and decided that I should probably wear some. The panel starts at 7pm, you need to RSVP (which you can do here) and the cost is $10.  The information you’ll get at the panel alone …Read the Rest

Facebook: I Used To Be A "Fan." Right Now I Do Not "Like" You.

This week, Facebook lost a little more respect in my eyes. Facebook is huge.  It’s a behemoth.  It’s also a necessity.  More people visit Facebook than any other site on the internet.  If you’re a business of any kind, you need to be on Facebook.  My problem with Facebook is that they seem to change the “rules” every few weeks.  The home page has had more face-lifts than an ageing actress.  Yes, @jamiefishback, I’m talking about you.  And now we have the change from “Fan” to “Like.” Facebook, in its infinite wisdom, decided that it didn’t like the concept of being a …Read the Rest

Brand Me, Baby

Brand Me, Baby

That’s my kid.  I posted this picture for two reasons.  1) To embarrass the crap out of him and 2) He looks a lot like me, I created him to help promote my “brand.” I want to talk about Branding.  No, not the kind you do to cattle.  Unless that’s part of your marketing plan to promote your book, a tour that includes “Free Branding of the Author’s Signature with Every Purchase!!”  Hmm, on second thought, don’t steal that.  I might use it. I’m talking about how you brand yourself in your marketing materials, your internet presence, everywhere you want your book …Read the Rest

Rush Toward The Finish

Rush Toward The Finish

Very soon I will be seeing that view above in person for the first time.  I’m excited.  New Jersey rocks. Today is Sunday.  No, I am not watching football.  I’m writing.  Actually, I’m updating my ToDo List before  I write, which, for those of you who need a good one for the Blackberry, is Taskjot and Toodledo (they work together).  I recommend it over all others, and trust me when I tell you that I’ve tried a lot.  Remember The Milk is good too, but the integration with the Blackberry is less than desired (it’s great for the iPhone, but AT&T …Read the Rest
