The Living Score

On my way into Malibu this morning, I was listening to a mix of score music and a piece came on by Nobuo Uematsu, from the Final Fantasy series of games. It was a full orchestra version of the games “End Titles,” and runs over 10 minutes long. There’s a section in the middle with a vocalist, and I noticed that the score, particularly the string section, seemed to “breathe” in and out with the vocals, and I realized that the dynamics combined with the notes of what he had written felt “alive.” The score was a living entity, breathing, moving, beating, moving around the car fluidly and constantly in motion.

It gave me something to strive for in my own writing.
